Is cTrader or MetaTrader 5 better for CFD trading?

Is cTrader or MetaTrader 5 better for CFD trading?

Is cTrader or MetaTrader 5 better for CFD trading? cTrader suits manual traders on raw pricing; MetaTrader 5 suits automated trading with Expert Advisors.

At a glance

Neither is better for everyone. cTrader is usually the better choice for manual CFD traders who want a clear order ticket and market depth, especially on a raw-spread account. MetaTrader 5 is the better choice if you automate with Expert Advisors or rely on a large library of indicators. Pepperstone is our first pick because it offers both, plus MT4 and TradingView, so you can switch without changing broker. At Best Trading Signal (BestTradingSignal.com) we rank Capital.com second, with MT4, MT5 and TradingView, and XS third.

  • cTrader: clean manual trading, visible market depth, automation written in C#
  • MetaTrader 5: Expert Advisors in MQL5, 21 timeframes, built-in economic calendar
  • MT4 vs MT5: MT4 for old Expert Advisors you already own; MT5 for anything new
  • Pepperstone offers all three, plus TradingView, its own web platform and app
  • Platform does not set your price: your account type does (Standard or Razor)
  • Still high risk: 73.6% of Pepperstone's retail accounts under the FCA lose money on spread bets and CFDs

Which one should you choose?

Choose by how you trade. If you place trades by hand and watch the cost of every entry, cTrader usually feels cleaner and shows you market depth without extra set-up. If you run, or plan to run, automated strategies, MetaTrader 5 is the safer choice because far more Expert Advisors and indicators are written for it.

You do not have to decide forever. Pepperstone supports cTrader, MetaTrader 5, MetaTrader 4 and TradingView, so you can test all of them on the demo. If that suits you, you can open a Pepperstone account and compare the platforms side by side.

How do cTrader and MetaTrader 5 compare?

Both are full trading platforms with desktop, web and mobile versions. The differences are in automation, layout and the size of the ecosystem around them.

Which brokers offer cTrader?

Among the three brokers we rank, Pepperstone is the one whose cTrader support we have confirmed. Capital.com offers its own platform, MT4, MT5 and TradingView; cTrader is not in the line-up we have verified. For XS, check the platform list on its own site.

cTrader pairs naturally with Pepperstone's Razor account, which shows raw spreads from 0.0 pips plus about $3.50 per lot per side. The depth view makes it easy to see what you are paying at the moment you click. Our guide to the best cTrader brokers goes into more detail.

MT4 or MT5, which is better, and which brokers offer both?

For a new trader, MT5 is better: it is the newer platform, with more timeframes, a built-in calendar and support for more order types. MT4 is still worth using if you already own an Expert Advisor written for it, because MT4 code does not run on MT5 without being rewritten.

Of the brokers we rank, Pepperstone and Capital.com both offer MT4 and MT5. Our guide to the best MT5 brokers lists what to test when you move.

Is MetaTrader still better than TradingView for active trading?

For automated active trading, yes: TradingView is not built to run Expert Advisors, and MetaTrader is. For manual active trading, it is closer. TradingView's charts and alerts are strong, and you can trade from them through a connected broker account. Some manual traders chart on TradingView and keep MetaTrader only for automation.

Pepperstone supports both, so you do not need two brokers to work that way. Our guide to the best trading apps covers the phone side.

Does your platform change your trading costs?

No. Your costs come from the account type, not the platform. At Pepperstone, Standard has no commission and a wider spread, and Razor has raw spreads from 0.0 pips plus about $3.50 per lot per side. Overnight funding applies to positions held past the daily cut-off on any platform.

Check which account types are available on your chosen platform during sign-up, and compare the live spread on the same symbol across platforms on the demo. Capital.com, our second choice, has no trading commission on any of its platforms. XS, our third, offers a no-commission Standard account and an Elite account from 0.1 pips plus $6 per lot round turn.

Which platform is best for following Best Trading Signal alerts?

Any of them. Each Best Trading Signal alert gives an entry, a take-profit and a stop-loss, which you can enter in cTrader, MT5, MT4 or TradingView in a few seconds. Use the platform where you can set both levels on one ticket most quickly. Pepperstone clients receive the alerts through the paid subscription on our Telegram bot.

Checklist: choosing your CFD platform

To test every platform at one broker, open your Pepperstone account here.

Disclosure: we may earn a commission from Pepperstone, Capital.com and XS if you open an account through our links. That does not change what we publish about them. This page is general education, not personal investment advice.

Risk warning (Pepperstone): 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider under the FCA, 74.1% under CySEC, 76.1% under BaFin, 80% under the SCB and 88% under the CMA (Kenya). The figure depends on the entity your account is opened with. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

  • List your tools: if you own an Expert Advisor, its language decides the platform.
  • Trade by hand on raw pricing? Try cTrader with a Razor account first.
  • Starting fresh with automation? Choose MetaTrader 5 over MetaTrader 4.
  • Test order entry: set a stop-loss and take-profit on one ticket on the demo.
  • Check symbol names: they can differ between platforms at the same broker.
  • Read the entity: outside the UK, your client agreement names a different Pepperstone company.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on how you trade. cTrader is usually better for manual traders who want a clean order ticket and visible market depth, especially on a raw-spread account. MetaTrader 5 is better for automated trading with Expert Advisors. Pepperstone offers both, so you can test each on the demo.

No, not as they are. MT4 Expert Advisors are written in MQL4, and MT5 uses MQL5, so the code must be rewritten or replaced. If you depend on an MT4 tool, keep using MT4. Pepperstone and Capital.com both offer MT4 and MT5, so you can run each side by side.

Yes, for manual trading. Its order ticket is clear, and it shows market depth without extra set-up, which helps a beginner see the real cost of each trade. A beginner who plans to automate later may still prefer MetaTrader 5. Practise on the demo either way before you fund.

Yes. cTrader has mobile versions, as do MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView. Pepperstone also has its own mobile app. If you trade from your desk and check positions on the move, use the same platform on both so your layout and habits carry over.

Of the brokers we rank, Pepperstone offers all three, plus TradingView, its own web platform and its app. Capital.com offers MT4 and MT5 with TradingView and its own platform; we have not seen cTrader in its line-up. Check XS's current platform list on its own site.
