Which platform should you use?
Table 1 — Matching the platform to the job
| If you... | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run expert advisors or MQL scripts | MT4 | The largest EA ecosystem; MT4 remains the default for automated retail strategies |
| Want more instruments, timeframes and depth | MT5 | 21 timeframes, more built-in indicators, an economic calendar, and shares and futures alongside FX |
| Care about execution transparency and cost | cTrader | Level II depth of market as standard, and the lowest commission of the four at Pepperstone |
| Live in your charts | TradingView | The best charting and community scripting available; trade directly from the chart |
| Want simplicity on a phone | A proprietary app | Fewer options, less to misconfigure — Pepperstone offers one, IC Markets does not |
What each Australian licensee offers
The data-centre disclosure matters more than it looks if you intend to run an EA on a VPS. Latency to the trade server is what a VPS exists to reduce, and you cannot place one close to a server whose location is not published. IC states both venues and adds that its MetaTrader servers sit within a millisecond of major VPS providers. Pepperstone publishes neither location.
Table 2 — Platform availability
| Platform | Pepperstone | IC Markets |

| API | Standard API and FIX — FIX requires €160m monthly volume | FIX via cTrader only — not available for MT4 or MT5 |
| VPS | Sponsored for Pro clients; provider and cost not published | Free tiers at 15, 30 and 75 standard lots per month |
| Data centres published | not published | Equinix NY4 (MetaTrader) · LD5 London (cTrader) |
The same trade costs different amounts on different platforms
This is the practical detail most platform comparisons miss entirely.
Identical trade, identical instrument, USD 1.00 difference per lot decided entirely by which platform you selected at signup. Over 200 lots a year that is USD 200 for nothing. cTrader is the cheapest of the four, and it also gives you depth of market as standard — so the cheaper option is arguably the more informative one as well.
One restriction to know before choosing. Commission on MT4 and MT5 is charged in full when the position opens, not split across open and close. It makes no difference to the total, but it affects how your account equity reads immediately after entry — and it surprises people who are watching a small position closely.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Australian licensees are not required to publish a retail loss percentage and neither AFSL holder on this page does. Read the Product Disclosure Statement and Financial Services Guide before deciding.
Pepperstone Group Limited holds ASIC AFSL 414530. ASIC does not mandate a retail-loss percentage, so none is quoted here rather than borrowing another entity's figure. This is a paid affiliate link: we may earn a commission if you open an account. It does not change our ranking or what we publish.
