Best Broker for Trading Stocks and Indices (2026)

Which broker is best for trading shares, indices and ETFs as CFDs in 2026 — market range, cost model and what you give up versus owning the stock.

Dióhéjban

If you want to trade shares and indices rather than own them, a CFD broker is the right tool — and [Capital.com](/hu/brokers/capital-com) is the strongest of the five we rank for it. It lists 3,000+ markets covering shares, indices, ETFs and thematic baskets, charges zero commission on spread-only pricing, and opens at $20. Pepperstone covers shares, indices and ETFs too and is the better account if index trading sits alongside a high-volume FX book, priced from 0.0 pips on Razor. The critical caveat, which most pages bury: you are trading CFDs, not buying stock. You get no share ownership, no voting rights and no dividend as such, and the position is leveraged. For long-term investing that is the wrong instrument; for two-way short-horizon trading it is the right one.

  • Best for market range: Capital.com — 3,000+ markets incl. shares, indices, ETFs and thematic baskets
  • Best alongside an FX book: Pepperstone — shares, indices and ETFs at 0.0-pip Razor pricing
  • You do not own the shares — these are CFDs: no voting rights, no ownership, no stock certificate
  • You can go short — the structural advantage over a traditional share-dealing account
  • Leverage cuts both ways — retail leverage is capped under FCA, ASIC and CySEC and losses scale with it
  • For long-term investing, use a share-dealing account instead — a leveraged CFD is not a buy-and-hold vehicle

CFD versus owning the share: pick the right instrument first

This decision matters more than the choice of broker, and it is the one most comparison pages skip past. A share-dealing account buys you the actual stock: you own it, you vote, you receive dividends, and you profit only if it rises. A share CFD is a contract on the price: no ownership, no voting rights, leverage available, and you can go short as easily as long.

If you are building a long-term position, the CFD is the wrong instrument — financing costs accrue on leveraged positions held over time, and a stop is not a substitute for conviction. If you are trading a company's earnings reaction or an index's move over days or weeks, and you want the ability to trade both directions, the CFD is what that job needs. Our long-term stock investment signals guide covers the other side of that line.

Capital.com for range

Capital.com is the broadest of the five on equity exposure: over 3,000 markets spanning individual shares, major and minor indices, ETFs and thematic baskets that group companies by theme rather than sector. If you trade around earnings, rotate between indices, or want exposure to a theme without picking a single name, that breadth is the reason to choose it.

Cost is zero commission, spread-only from 0.6 pips — one number to size against, which matters when you are running several positions across different markets at once. The $20 minimum makes it practical to test an approach at small size before committing. Our stock signals guide covers the signal side of the same markets.

Pepperstone for indices alongside FX

If indices are one part of a book that is mostly currencies, Pepperstone is the more efficient single account. You get shares, indices and ETFs alongside a full FX offering, priced on the Razor model from 0.0 pips with commission from around $3.50 per lot per side — which is where the cost advantage shows up if you trade actively.

It also brings MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView, so index strategies that run as expert advisors have somewhere to live. Our Pepperstone vs Capital.com comparison works through which account suits which trading pattern.

What leverage actually does to a stock position

Leverage on equities is where retail accounts get into trouble fastest, because single stocks gap on news in a way that major currency pairs generally do not. An earnings release, a profit warning or a regulatory decision can move a share double digits between one session's close and the next open — straight through a stop, which is filled at the next available price rather than the level you set.

Neither broker offers a guaranteed stop-loss, so position size is the control that actually works. Retail leverage is capped under FCA, ASIC and CySEC, and those caps are tighter on single shares than on indices for exactly this reason. Our negative balance protection guide covers what happens when a gap runs past your margin.

Gyakran ismételt kérdések

Capital.com for range — 3,000+ markets covering shares, indices, ETFs and thematic baskets, zero commission and a $20 minimum. Pepperstone if indices sit alongside an active FX book, with 0.0-pip Razor pricing and four platforms.

No. A CFD is a contract on the price. You hold no stock, you have no voting rights, and you receive a dividend adjustment rather than a dividend. In exchange you can trade both directions and use leverage.

Yes. Going short on a share or index CFD is as straightforward as going long, which is the main structural advantage over a traditional share-dealing account.

No. Financing costs accrue on leveraged positions held over time, and leverage magnifies drawdowns that a long-term investor would otherwise sit through. For buy-and-hold, use a share-dealing account that gives you actual ownership.

Your stop is filled at the next available price, which can be materially worse than the level you set. Neither broker offers a guaranteed stop-loss, and single shares gap on earnings and news more than major currency pairs do — which is why position size matters more than stop placement here.
