Which broker is best for trading indices in the UK?

Which broker is best for trading indices in the UK? Our pick is Pepperstone: FCA-authorised, 20+ cash indices including UK100, and no commission on index CFDs.

This guide is our global English edition. The broker-deposit offer it describes (free signals with an XS deposit) is not available to residents of India. In India our signals are available by Telegram subscription only.

At a glance

For most UK index traders, Pepperstone is the best fit we have found. It is authorised by the FCA (FRN 684312), lists more than 20 cash stock indices, including the UK100 (FTSE 100), and charges no commission on index CFDs and spread bets. Overnight funding may apply. It also offers forwards on eight major indices. At Best Trading Signal (BestTradingSignal.com) we rank Capital.com second: FCA-authorised, with no trading commission and MetaTrader support. XS comes third: not FCA-authorised, but home to our free-signals offer.

  • FCA-authorised: Pepperstone Limited, FRN 684312, with UK retail leverage caps
  • 20+ cash indices: UK100, NAS100, US30, GER40, US500, JPN225 and more
  • Forwards on eight: AUS200, GER40, JPN225, NAS100, UK100, US30, US500 and HK50
  • No commission: on index CFDs and spread bets; overnight funding may apply
  • MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView: trade the same indices on the platform you know
  • Still high risk: Pepperstone reports that 73.6% of its UK retail accounts lose money on spread bets and CFDs

Where can I trade indices with leverage in the UK?

With an FCA-authorised broker, through index CFDs or index spread bets. Leverage for UK retail clients is capped by FCA rules, so you put up only part of the position's value as margin. Check the margin rate for each index on the broker's product page, because it differs between indices and is lower than the 1:30 allowed on major currency pairs.

Pepperstone Limited (FRN 684312) and Capital.com (FCA 793714) are both FCA-authorised. XS is not. If you want the broker we rank first for UK indices, you can open a Pepperstone account and try the index list on the demo.

Which broker offers the widest range of stock indices?

We cannot honestly name the single widest range across the whole market, because that would mean checking every broker's list on the same day. What we can confirm is Pepperstone's: more than 20 cash stock indices on its UK site, plus forwards on eight of them. That covers every major region a UK trader is likely to want.

What is the best broker for trading the FTSE 100?

For the FTSE 100, we pick Pepperstone. It offers the UK100 as a cash index and as a forward, as a CFD or as a spread bet, and it charges no commission on either. For a UK resident, spread betting the UK100 means sizing in pounds per point, which can be easier to plan. Spread betting is described as tax-free in the UK, but tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances.

Before you trade it, watch the UK100 on the demo during the London open. The spread you see then is the one that matters, not the narrowest figure of the day.

What are the most actively traded indices for UK traders?

We do not have reliable volume data for UK retail traders, so we will not rank them. The indices UK traders tend to follow are easy to name, though: the FTSE 100 for the home market, the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Dow Jones for the US, and the DAX for Europe.

Our own index signals focus on the Nasdaq and the DAX, because both move strongly during the European and US sessions. Our guide to index trading signals for Nasdaq and DAX explains how we trade them.

Which broker is best for day trading indices?

For day trading indices in the UK, we again pick Pepperstone, because index trades carry no commission and a position closed the same day avoids overnight funding. Your cost is then mainly the spread, so the session you trade in matters more than anything else. Trading hours vary by symbol, so check them on the platform; do not assume any index trades all day and night.

Which brokers let you trade indices on MetaTrader?

Of the brokers we rank, Pepperstone and Capital.com both offer MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. Pepperstone also offers cTrader and TradingView, and Capital.com offers TradingView and its own platform. XS's platform list is on its own site.

Symbol names differ by platform and broker. After you log in to the demo, open the symbol list in MetaTrader and search for UK100 or GER40 to confirm what you can trade. Our guide to the best MT5 brokers covers the setup.

How do Best Trading Signal's index signals work with Pepperstone?

Each Best Trading Signal alert on the Nasdaq or DAX gives an entry, a take-profit and a stop-loss. On Pepperstone, you place it on NAS100 or GER40, sized from the stop distance and the amount you accept to lose. You receive signals on Pepperstone through the paid subscription on our Telegram bot.

There is also a free route, through XS only: open an XS account via our link and deposit $400, which remains your trading money. Remember that XS is not FCA-authorised. Our index results sit with all the others on the performance page. Past results do not guarantee future results, and no signal is certain to win.

Checklist before you trade indices in the UK

To trade the UK100 and other indices, open your Pepperstone account here.

Disclosure: we may earn a commission from Pepperstone, Capital.com and XS if you open an account through our links. That does not change what we publish about them. This page is general education, not personal investment advice.

Risk warning (Pepperstone): 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider under the FCA, 74.1% under CySEC, 76.1% under BaFin, 80% under the SCB and 88% under the CMA (Kenya). The figure depends on the entity your account is opened with. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

  • Confirm FCA authorisation: check the firm reference number on the FCA register.
  • Read the margin rate: each index has its own; it is lower leverage than on major pairs.
  • Pick cash or forward: cash for short trades, forwards if you hold for longer.
  • Check trading hours: they vary by symbol.
  • Choose your wrapper: spread bet in pounds per point, or CFD in contracts.

Frequently asked questions

Our pick is Pepperstone. It is FCA-authorised (FRN 684312), lists more than 20 cash stock indices including the UK100, offers forwards on eight major indices, and charges no commission on index CFDs and spread bets. Overnight funding may apply to positions held past the daily cut-off.

A cash index tracks the current index price and charges overnight funding for each night you hold it, which suits short trades. A forward has a set expiry date, and the holding cost is built into its price instead, which can suit trades held for weeks. Pepperstone offers forwards on eight indices.

Not on every index. Trading hours vary by symbol, and each index has its own breaks, so check the hours on the platform before you plan a trade. Do not assume weekend trading. The busiest hours are usually when the underlying market is open.

Yes. Pepperstone offers the UK100, which tracks the FTSE 100, as a spread bet with no commission. You stake an amount per point. Spread betting is described as tax-free in the UK, but the tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances, so check before you rely on it.

No. Under FCA rules, retail leverage of 1:30 applies to major currency pairs, and indices carry their own, lower caps. Check the margin rate for each index on Pepperstone's product page, and size each trade from your stop-loss, not from the maximum leverage on offer.

Trading forex, CFDs and crypto carries a substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for every trader — offshore brokers are not regulated by SEBI, our calls are analyst opinions and education rather than investment advice, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
