What is the difference between a Pepperstone Razor and Standard account?

What is the difference between a Pepperstone Razor and Standard account?

What is the difference between a Pepperstone Razor and Standard account? Standard has no commission; Razor adds about $3.50 per lot per side for raw spreads.

Kort fortalt

The difference is how you pay. A Pepperstone Standard account charges no commission and builds the cost into a wider spread. A Razor account shows raw spreads from 0.0 pips and charges about $3.50 per lot per side. Razor usually wins for frequent or larger trades; Standard is simpler for occasional ones. Pepperstone is our first pick for traders who want this choice. At Best Trading Signal (BestTradingSignal.com) we rank Capital.com second for spread-only pricing with no commission, and XS third, whose Elite account starts from 0.1 pips plus $6 per lot round turn.

  • Standard: no commission; every cost is inside the spread you see
  • Razor: raw spreads from 0.0 pips plus about $3.50 per lot per side, about $7 per lot round turn
  • Break-even on EUR/USD: Razor is cheaper when the Standard spread is more than about 0.7 pips wider
  • No published average spread: check live EUR/USD prices on the demo at the hours you trade
  • Costs beyond the spread: overnight funding, Razor spot gold commission and US share commission
  • Still high risk: under the FCA, 73.6% of Pepperstone's retail accounts lose money on spread bets and CFDs

What account types does Pepperstone offer?

Pepperstone offers two main live CFD accounts, Standard and Razor, plus a free demo account. UK clients can also choose spread betting, which Pepperstone advertises with spreads from 0.1 points and no commission.

Standard and Razor are two pricing models at the same broker, so the main decision is how you prefer to pay. If you already know which one fits, you can open a Pepperstone account and pick it during sign-up.

Razor vs Standard account, which is cheaper?

Razor is cheaper whenever the extra spread on Standard costs more than the Razor commission. On a pair quoted in US dollars, such as EUR/USD, one pip on one standard lot is worth $10. The Razor commission is about $7 per lot for a full round turn. So Razor wins once the Standard spread is more than about 0.7 pips wider than the Razor spread on the same pair at the same moment.

What are Pepperstone's spreads and fees?

Pepperstone publishes its commission schedule clearly but does not publish an average spread figure, so we do not quote one. Here is what we can confirm on the UK site.

Pepperstone fees by product (UK site)

Pepperstone fees by product (UK site)
ProductCommissionNote
Forex on StandardNoneCost is in the spread
Forex on RazorAbout $3.50 per lot per sideRaw spreads from 0.0 pips
Index CFDs and spread betsNoneMore than 20 cash indices; overnight funding may apply
Commodity CFDsNone, except Razor spot gold (XAUUSD)40 spot commodity markets
US share CFDs0.02 USD per share per side600+ US shares
UK spread betsNoneSpreads from 0.1 points

What are Pepperstone's spreads on EUR/USD?

On Razor, EUR/USD spreads start from 0.0 pips before commission. On Standard, the spread is wider because it includes the cost. Pepperstone does not publish an average figure for either, and any number we printed would be out of date within minutes.

The honest way to find your spread is to log in to the demo, open EUR/USD on both account types, and note the spread at the hours you actually trade, including around major news. Spreads move with liquidity, so a reading at a quiet hour tells you little about a busy one.

What are the hidden costs of trading with Pepperstone?

None of these costs are hidden, but new traders often miss them. Overnight funding is charged when you hold a CFD past the daily rollover, including on index CFDs. Spread widening at quiet hours or during news can cost more than the commission. On Razor, spot gold carries a commission, unlike other commodities. US share CFDs cost 0.02 USD per share per side.

Two items we have not verified: withdrawal fees and conversion charges when you fund in a currency different from your account currency. Check both on Pepperstone's funding page before your first deposit. Our guide on zero-commission trading accounts explains why no commission never means no cost.

Is commission-based or spread-only pricing better for active traders?

For active traders, commission-based pricing is usually better. A fixed commission is easy to predict, and raw spreads keep the variable part of the cost small. The more lots you trade, the more any extra spread on a no-commission account adds up.

Take a trader doing 40 round-turn lots of EUR/USD a month. On Razor, the commission is about $280. If the Standard spread were 1.0 pip wider, the same volume would cost $400 extra in spread. If it were only 0.5 pips wider, it would cost $200, and Standard would be cheaper.

Spread-only pricing still suits people who trade a few times a month and prefer one number to watch. Capital.com, our second choice, works this way with no trading commission. XS, our third, offers both: a no-commission Standard account and an Elite account from 0.1 pips on EUR/USD plus $6 per lot round turn, with a $500 minimum. Our raw spread vs standard guide compares the models across brokers.

Which Pepperstone account works best with Best Trading Signal's signals?

Either account works, because each Best Trading Signal alert gives a fixed entry, take-profit and stop-loss. If you follow several signals a day on forex majors, Razor's fixed commission is usually easier to budget. If you take one or two a week, Standard is fine. Pepperstone users get our signals through the paid subscription on our Telegram bot.

Our free signals run on XS, not Pepperstone: open an XS account through our link and deposit $400, which remains your own trading capital. See every result on the performance page. Past results do not guarantee future results, and no signal is certain to win.

Checklist: choosing between Razor and Standard

When you have your numbers, open your Pepperstone account here.

Disclosure: we may earn a commission from Pepperstone, Capital.com and XS if you open an account through our links. That does not change what we publish about them. This page is general education, not personal investment advice.

Risk warning (Pepperstone): 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider under the FCA, 74.1% under CySEC, 76.1% under BaFin, 80% under the SCB and 88% under the CMA (Kenya). The figure depends on the entity your account is opened with. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

  • Count your volume: estimate your round-turn lots per month before you choose.
  • Measure the gap: compare Standard and Razor spreads on the demo at your trading hours.
  • Do the sum: Razor wins on EUR/USD once the gap is more than about 0.7 pips.
  • Add overnight funding: if you hold trades for days, it can outweigh the spread.
  • Check gold separately: Razor charges a commission on spot gold.
  • Read the entity: outside the UK, your client agreement names a different Pepperstone company and loss figure.

Standard has no commission and a wider spread that contains the cost. Razor has raw spreads from 0.0 pips and a commission of about $3.50 per lot per side. Razor is usually cheaper for frequent trading; Standard is simpler for occasional trades. Confirm on the sign-up form which platforms each account is offered on.

About $7 per standard lot for a round turn, because Pepperstone charges about $3.50 when you open and about $3.50 when you close. On a 0.10-lot trade, that is about $0.70 in total. Add the raw spread on top to get your full cost per trade.

Only on Razor. Pepperstone charges no commission on its commodity CFDs, with one exception: spot gold (XAUUSD) on a Razor account. On Standard, the cost of a gold trade sits inside the spread. Compare the two on the demo if gold is your main market.

Usually, yes. A scalper takes many small trades, so a raw spread from 0.0 pips plus a fixed commission tends to cost less than a wider spread on every entry. Check the gap on the demo at your trading hours, because the advantage shrinks when the Standard spread is close to Razor's.

Yes. Pepperstone offers a demo account, so you can watch Standard and Razor pricing on the same pair side by side. Note the spread at the times you plan to trade, add the Razor commission, and compare the totals before you commit real money.
