What is the difference between spread betting and CFD trading?

What is the difference between spread betting and CFD trading?

What is the difference between spread betting and CFD trading? A spread bet is staked per point; a CFD is a contract in units. The tax treatment differs too.

한눈에 보기

The main difference is how you size the trade and how it may be taxed. In a spread bet, you stake an amount per point of price movement. In a CFD, you buy or sell a number of contracts. Both are leveraged and track the same market price. Spread betting is described as tax-free for UK clients, but tax treatment depends on your circumstances. Pepperstone is our first pick for UK spread betting, with spreads from 0.1 points and no commission. At Best Trading Signal (BestTradingSignal.com) our second choice is Capital.com, and our third is XS.

  • Spread bet: you stake, say, £2 per point; the result is in pounds
  • CFD: you trade contracts or lots; commission may apply on some products
  • Tax: spread betting is described as tax-free in the UK, but it depends on your individual circumstances
  • Pepperstone UK: spread betting from 0.1 points and zero commission, under FCA FRN 684312
  • No crypto for UK retail: the FCA bans crypto spread bets and CFDs for retail clients
  • Still high risk: 73.6% of retail accounts lose money on Pepperstone's spread bets and CFDs under the FCA

How do spread betting and CFD trading work?

Both let you profit or lose from a price move without owning the asset, and both use leverage. The difference is the wrapper. With a spread bet, you choose a stake per point. If you stake £2 per point on the UK100 and it rises 40 points, you make £80, before costs. If it falls 40 points, you lose £80. With a CFD, you buy or sell a number of contracts, and your gain or loss is the price change multiplied by your position size.

Sized to the same exposure, the market result is the same. What changes is the way you set the size, the costs on some products, and the possible tax treatment. If you want to try both side by side, you can open a Pepperstone account and compare them on the demo first.

Is spread betting tax free in the UK?

Spread betting is generally described as tax-free for UK clients, and Pepperstone uses that description. But tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and can change. We cannot tell you how it applies to you.

CFD gains are treated differently for tax purposes. If tax is the reason you are choosing one over the other, read HMRC's guidance or speak to a qualified tax adviser first. Never let a possible tax saving push you into a larger position than you would otherwise take.

Is spread betting or CFD trading better for a UK trader?

For most UK retail traders who think in pounds, spread betting is simpler to size. Its general tax description may also appeal, though that depends on each person's circumstances. CFDs are often the better fit if you use automated strategies built around lots, or if your plan is written in contract sizes. Neither is safer: both are leveraged, and Pepperstone publishes one loss rate for both.

Does Pepperstone offer spread betting in the UK?

Yes. Pepperstone Limited, authorised by the FCA under Firm Reference Number 684312, offers spread betting to UK clients. Pepperstone advertises spreads from 0.1 points with zero commission to pay. It also offers no commission on index spread bets, although overnight funding may apply if you hold a position past the daily cut-off.

As with any UK broker, crypto is off the table: the FCA bans crypto spread bets and CFDs for retail clients.

Which spread betting brokers charge no commission?

Pepperstone does: its UK spread bets carry zero commission, with the cost in the spread, which starts from 0.1 points. No commission is not the same as no cost. You still pay the spread on every bet and overnight funding on positions held past the daily cut-off.

We have verified Pepperstone's spread-betting pricing only. For any other provider, read the pricing page and the key information document before you open, and check whether funding charges are shown per day or per year.

Which spread betting broker is best in the UK?

Among the brokers we rank, Pepperstone is our first pick for UK spread betting: it is FCA-authorised, it charges no commission on spread bets, and the same FCA-authorised company offers CFDs if you later prefer contracts. We have not verified a UK spread-betting offer for the other two.

Capital.com is our second choice for UK traders who prefer CFDs; it is FCA-authorised (793714) and charges no trading commission. XS is third: it is not FCA-authorised, so a UK client would not have FCA protections there. Our Pepperstone vs Capital.com comparison goes further.

How do you follow Best Trading Signal alerts with a spread bet?

Each Best Trading Signal alert gives an entry, a take-profit and a stop-loss as prices. On a spread bet, turn the stop distance into a stake. If the stop is 25 points away and you accept losing £50, your stake is £2 per point. The same signal works on a CFD; you size it in contracts instead.

For Pepperstone spread bettors, the signals come via a paid subscription on our Telegram bot. To get them at no charge, you would use XS instead: open an XS account through our link and deposit $400, which stays in your account as trading capital. Results are on the performance page. Past results do not guarantee future results, and no signal is certain to win.

Checklist: spread bet or CFD?

To try both wrappers with an FCA-authorised broker, open your Pepperstone account here.

Disclosure: we may earn a commission from Pepperstone, Capital.com and XS if you open an account through our links. That does not change what we publish about them. This page is general education, not personal investment or tax advice.

Risk warning (Pepperstone): 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider under the FCA, 74.1% under CySEC, 76.1% under BaFin, 80% under the SCB and 88% under the CMA (Kenya). The figure depends on the entity your account is opened with. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

  • Pick your sizing habit: pounds per point, or contracts.
  • Check tax for yourself: read HMRC guidance or ask an adviser; do not rely on a broker's description.
  • Count overnight funding: it applies to both if you hold past the daily cut-off.
  • Set your stake from the stop: risk amount divided by stop distance in points.
  • Practise on the demo: place the same trade as a spread bet and as a CFD and compare.

자주 묻는 질문

A spread bet is sized as a stake per point of price movement, and the result is in pounds. A CFD is sized in contracts. Both are leveraged products on the same prices. In the UK, spread betting is described as tax-free, but tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances.

Not as a UK retail client of an FCA-authorised broker such as Pepperstone, because negative-balance protection applies to retail clients in the UK. You can still lose your whole deposit quickly, because spread bets are leveraged. Set a stop-loss on every bet and size the stake from it.

No, not as a retail client. The FCA bans crypto spread bets and crypto CFDs for retail clients, so Pepperstone's UK entity does not offer them to you. Forex, indices, commodities and shares remain available as spread bets or CFDs.

It is the narrowest spread Pepperstone advertises on its UK spread bets. The spread is the gap between the buy and sell price, and it is your cost to open the bet. Actual spreads vary by market and time of day, so check the live price before you place a bet.

Yes, if you hold a spread bet past the daily cut-off. Pepperstone charges no commission on index spread bets, but notes that overnight funding may apply. For short trades closed the same day, the spread is the main cost; for trades held for weeks, funding can matter more.
